What is Spyware?

Spyware worms are commonly peer-to-peer worms with backdoor Trojan like characteristics. Many Spyware variations will replicate themselves to a Windows system folder and will create entries in the registry in various susceptible locations. The Spyware trojan will then typically execute itself upon startup.

W32/Spyware-CW creates copies of itself in a folder called kazaabackupfiles and then sets the following registry entry to enable folder sharing on the KaZaA peer-to-peer network:
HKCU\Software\Kazaa\LocalContent\Dir0

W32/Spyware-CW runs stealth in the background as a service process
and listens for commands from remote users via IRC channels.

W32/Spyware-CO is another P2P  worm that spreads via KaZaA FSN. This spyware worm copies itself to the file "AUGMSG.EXE" in the Windows system folder and establishes the following corresponding registry entries.
 
 HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Run\
 augmsg=AUGMSG.EXE
 
 HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\RunOnce\
 augmsg=AUGMSG.EXE
 
 Spy ware then creates the folder system\kazaabackupfiles and copies itself
 there using executible filenames  (all .exe extension) such as the following:

 Sharing of these files results in the following registry entry:

Spy ware also logs keystrokes to the exe file ssl in the Windows sys/folder.
